Sustainable Sewing for January 2019

Sustainable Sewing for January 2019

I’m behind in posting but I wanted to share my bit of Sewing Sustainability for the month of January. I am working on a T-shirt quilt for a family member and after cutting away the image from the T-shirt front, there is a lot of blank, cotton knit leftover. I didn’t want to just put it in the trash. The pieces are not large enough to use in a garment, for me. I decided to cut 12.5 inch squares and serge them together two at a time, to make cleaning cloths. I am using a crewel needle, aka large embroidery needle, with a large eye, to feed the serger threads back through the stitching. I’ve dabbed a small amount of Stay Stitch on each corner. I am being careful to not use a lot of that because I want the cloths to be very soft. I am straight stitching an “X” through each cloth, to hold together the two pieces. I’m not sure how these are going to hold up.  I expect they will be fine for a year or two of use. I will let you know after I have used them a few times.
